One of nine siblings, Emily Norcross Dickinson was born to parents Joel and Betsey Norcross in Monson, Massachusetts.

Education:
Despite the political climate at the time of her birth, her father was a strong believer in women being educated and thus, she was sent to Monson Academy, a private school in Monson, Massachusetts. Following her primary schooling, Emily was sent to boarding school in New Haven, Connecticut.

Marriage:
In 1826, Edward Dickinson traveled to Monson, Massachusetts on business during his establishment in becoming a lawyer like his father and the couple struck up a two year long correspondance which included 93 letters back and fourth to one another. The couple were married on May 8, 1828 in Amherst, Massachusetts.
Children:
Emily Norcross Dickinson gave birth to three childrem; one boy and two girls. From oldest to youngest: Austin Dickinson, who was born in 1829, Emily Dickinson, born in 1830, and Lavinia Dickinson, the youngest of the three, who was born in 1833.
1874-1882:
1874 was a year of many troubles for Emily Norcross Dickinson as her beloved husband Edward, of nearly 36 years passed away that June. Despite being in relatively good health for most of her adult life, nearly a year to the date of his passing, Emily Norcross Dickinson suffered from a life changing stroke in 1875, which left her debilitated and paralyzed until the date of her passing on November 14, 1882.
