Saint Valentine
Well, Grace she's gone, she's a half-written poemShe went out for cigarettes and never came homeAnd I swallowed the sun and screamed and wailedStraight down to the dirt so I could find her trailSpread out across the Great DivideWell, I just came to talk, Saint ValentineI never pictured you living here with the rats and the vinesAin't that my old heart hanging out on your linesYou're all fucked up, Saint ValentineNow I circle the bars on the promenadeWhile the girls in the glass, they're just throwing me shadeAnd I'm saving my coins up for Jingling JaneShe's out plucking strings in the pouring rainSee I'm all crooked feet, Saint ValentineI've circled this map till it caught on fireNow Grace she's left you just skin and boneWell, you hang up your hat, but you can't call it homeYou've tried and you've tried, but you can't call it homeYou're the loneliest one, Saint ValentineYou're the loneliest one, Saint ValentineYou're all fucked up, Saint ValentineAmsterdam
All insideOur Amsterdam she hidesWatery eyesThat howling wind, she's waving hiHer other hand's in mineOh-oh, silhouetteShe's growing tall and fineShe's got my backShe'll follow me down every streetNo matter what my crimeAll insideOur Amsterdam she fliesHoarding the kitesThat howling wind, she'll take everythingBut she's easy on the eyesOh, churches and trainsWhile they all look the same to me nowThey shoot you some placeWhile we ache to come home somehowFleet foxes, 2008

The story
All of these lines across my faceTell you the story of who I amSo many stories of where I've beenAnd how I got to where I amBut these stories don't mean anythingWhen you've got no one to tell them toIt's true, I was made for you
I climbed across the mountain topsSwam all across the ocean blueI crossed all the lines and I broke all the rulesBut baby, I broke them all for youOh, because even when I was flat broke You made me feel like a million bucksYou do, and I was made for you
You see the smile that's on my mouthIt's hiding the words that don't come outAnd all of my friends who think that I'm blessedThey don't know my head is a messNo, they don't know who I really amAnd they don't know what I've been through like you doAnd I was made for you
All of these lines across my faceTell you the story of who I amSo many stories of where I've beenAnd how I got to where I amOh, but these stories don't mean anythingWhen you've got no one to tell them toIt's true, I was made for you
Oh, yeah, well it's true that I was made for youTurpentine
watch you grow away from me in photographsAnd memories like spiesAnd salt betrays my eyes againI started losing sleep and gaining weightAnd wishing I was was ten againSo I could be your friend again
These days we go to waste like wineThat's turned to turpentineIt's six AM and I'm all messed upI didn't mean to waste your timeSo I'll fall back in lineBut I'm warning you we're growing up
I heard you found some pretty words to sayYou found your little game to playAnd there's no one allowed inThen just when we believe we could be greatReality it permeatesAnd conquers from within again
These days we go to waste like wineThat's turned to turpentineIt's six AM and I'm all messed upI didn't mean to waste your timeSo I'll fall back in lineBut I'm warning you we're growing upI know we're growing....I know we're OKThese days we go to waste like wineThat's turned to turpentineIt's six AM and I'm all messed upI didn't mean to waste your timeSo I'll fall back in lineBut I'm warning you we're growing upLana Del Rey: Born To Die, 2011

I walk the line
I keep a close watch on this heart of mineI keep my eyes wide open all the timeI keep the ends out for the tie that bindsBecause you're mine, I walk the line
I find it very, very easy to be trueI find myself alone when each day is throughYes, I'll admit that I'm a fool for youBecause you're mine, I walk the line
As sure as night is dark and day is lightI keep you on my mind both day and nightAnd happiness I've known proves that it's rightBecause you're mine, I walk the line
You've got a way to keep me on your sideYou give me cause for love that I can't hideFor you I know I'd even try to turn the tideBecause you're mine, I walk the lineFolsom prison blues
I hear the train a comin'It's rolling round the bendAnd I ain't seen the sunshine since I don't know whenI'm stuck in Folsom prison, and time keeps draggin' onBut that train keeps a rollin' on down to San Antone
When I was just a baby my mama told me"Son, always be a good boy, don't ever play with guns"But I shot a man in Reno just to watch him dieWhen I hear that whistle blowing, I hang my head and cry
I bet there's rich folks eating in a fancy dining carThey're probably drinkin' coffee and smoking big cigarsWell I know I had it coming, I know I can't be freeBut those people keep a movin'And that's what tortures me
Well if they freed me from this prisonIf that railroad train was mineI bet I'd move it on a little farther down the lineFar from Folsom prison, that's where I want to stayAnd I'd let that lonesome whistle blow my blues away
Valentine from judge otis Phillips Lord:
Imagine you are Judge Otis Phillips Lord; the year is 1877 and it's Valentine's day; your wife has just passed, and you have always admired Emily as a writer and an individualist. That is what this letter is about; considering that much of Emily's work was centered around Valentine's day, we can imagine that a majority of the letters she sent and recieved in early February throughout her life were Valentine's or Valentine's day poems. Although this letter includes a proposal, and Lord did not propose to Emily until his Emily's mother passed in 1880, we can imagine that it was on his mind as his trips to the Dickinson family homestead drastically increased during this period. Lord was also incredibly concerned about Emily's health; which she didnt talk about much and thus conspired with her sister Lavinia to keep tabs on her health records so this is why I imagine that he proposed more than once; given that only a few of their correspondances survived. It is suprising to me though that Lord stayed in Salem until his death in 1882, but perhaps the move would be all too complicated for him given that he lived in Salem for most of his life.
A Golden Heart shaped box:
Isnt this heart shaped box so Emily Dickinson coded? That's what I thought too! From the delicate painting of the bird, to the colors of the box, I thought this box perfectly encapsulated her essence. I wrote poem #17 on a gum wrapper as well. Also, fun fact, the song 'Heart Shaped Box' by Nirvana was inspired by Emily Dickinson!
unpacking Poem #705:
From symbolism to historical references, I feel as though Emily Dickinson is the only poet that can be read at random; at random moments in time and the random poems themselves, and be enthralled in a whirlwind of questions and answers. Each poem is a mystery that can either be solved or left profoundly undeciphered by the reader. And surprisingly enough, in both instances, the poem remains equally meaningful whether or not the words are completely understood. While exploring themes of her poems, word choice, use of dashes, capitalization, structural elements, and taking the time to decode the meanings: What would it take to write such a complex poem in only so many words? How is her work captivating to such a broad audience? And how does she incorporate themes of religion, gender, science and humanity into nearly everything she writes? Emily questions everything, so I have started to question everything in turn; Take poem 705 from The Poems of Emily Dickinson edited by R.W. Franklin for example:
I am ashamed - I hide -What right have I - to be a Bride -So late a Dowerless Girl -Nowhere to hide my dazzled Face -No one to teach me that new Grace -Nor introduce - My soul -
Me to adorn - How - tell -Trinket - to make Me beautiful -Fabrics of Cashmere -Never a Gown of Dun - more -Raiment instead - of Pompadour -For Me - My soul - to wear -
Fingers - to frame - my Round HairOval - as Feudal Ladies wore -Far Fashions - Fair -Skill - to hold my Brow like an Earl -Plead - like a Whippowil -Prove - like a Pearl -Then, for Character -
Fashion My Spirit quaint - white -Quick - like a Liquor -Gay - like Light -Bring Me my best Pride -No more ashamed -No more to hide -Meek - let it be - too proud - for Pride -Baptized - this Day - A Bride -
Me to adorn - How - tell -Trinket - to make Me beautiful -Fabrics of Cashmere -Never a Gown of Dun - more -Raiment instead - of Pompadour -For Me - My soul - to wear -

Unpacking Poem #117
"Arcturus" is his other name
I'd rather call him "Star"!
It's very mean of Science
To go and interfere!
I slew a worm the other day,
A "Savan" passing by
Murmered "Resergam" - "Centipede"!
"Oh Lord, how frail are we"!
I pull a flower from the woods -
A monster with a glass
Computes the stamens in a breath -
And has her in a "Class"!
Whereas I took the Butterfly
Aforetime in my hat,
He sits erect in "Cabinets" -
The Clover bells forgot!
What once was "Heaven"
Is "Zenith" now!
Where I proposed to go
When Time's brief masquerade was done
Is mapped, and charted too!
What if the "poles" should frisk about
And stand opon their heads!
I hope I'm ready for "the worst" -
Whatever prank betides!
Perhaps the "kingdom of Heaven's" changed.
I hope the "Children" there
Wont be "new fashioned" when I come -
And laugh at me - and stare!
I hope the Father in the skies
Will lift his little girl -
"Old fashioned"! naughty! everything!
Over the stile of "pearl"!
SECTION 1:Arcturus is both a Greek God and the fourth brightest star in the night skyShe is making fun of the principality of learning about science as a justification of God’s will, “It’s very mean of Science to go and interfere” because, like God did not manifest this star; it was science, it is a tangible thing, the conceptual idea that science was invented as an afterthought to God’s creation is preposterous, to EmilySECTION 2:A “Savan” is the Native American word for grasslands, this is another reference to how other things existed before white Christian men, (again she is growing up in pretty early America), like grasslands, and the land in which she livesA “Resurgam” is all three an early Victorian prototype of a Submarine, an alternative word for a baby carriage, and a Latin phrase meaning ‘i shall rise again’ and the significance of relating this word to the word Centipede through dashes more than likely connects the biblical significance that dreaming of centipedes bear– for whatever reason; however, a centipede can also symbolize a female and represent the ideas of strength and perseveranceIs the line “Oh Lord, how frail are we!” referencing women? Native Americans? The starry sky? Or perhaps all of the above?SECTION 3:“A monster with a glass” places Emily as a plant in the woods, viewing herself from the outside, coming in and taking something for herself; much like how she views the latter subjects in the above lines of the poem; also the “stamen” is the male fertilizing organ of a flower or the pollen sack, the cyclical process of pollination is scientifically referred to a “pollination class”; pollination in which a plant can complete itself, or by most insectsSECTION 4:Clover bells can only be pollinated by bees or honeybees, they can not be pollinated by just any insect like a Butterfly; “The clover bells forgot” may be a reference to herself, or women as a whole being more dependant on something than other plant or human counterparts; it is no coincidence that Emily uses phallic language in this section to emphasize the sexuality of the metaphorical construct she is attempting to lay outSECTION 5:The sun reaches over the observer's “Zenith” when it is 90 degrees above the horizon; again since the word “Zenith” means the highest point, otherwise known to Christians as the heavens, Emily is drawing attention to the fact that human beings will not just allow nature to be as it is; “Zenith” as we know it, or “Heaven” has an exact place in science; and yet it was God’s creation that willed mankind: its an existential irony about life and death in parallel to religion and science among everything else in the poemSECTION 6:“The poles” Emily references highlight the scientific ways in which “Armageddon” in Christian theology would realistically happen on earth, according to science referencing the geomagnetic reversals of the past which have caused mass extinctions and evolutions of earth's ecosystems and species. These happen statistically at random; not because all other religions besides Christianity have been abolished. Again though, this follows the same pattern of one group or thing presiding over another; and ultimately claiming utmost righteousness over the ‘inferior’ groupSECTION 7:Following the pattern of the other fragments of this poem, Emily suggests that the “Kingdom of Heaven” has changed; she proposes that since all other aspects of humanity have turned profoundly ‘blasphemous’ in construct, perhaps heaven has changed too and it is no longer a place worth resting inSECTION 8:Finally, Emily concludes that if there really is a God, that God would embrace her despite her femininity, despite her naughtiness and unfaithfulness to him; this in some way almost accentuates her disbelief in God because in this setting, God would essentially go against everything that Emily has been taught Christian people believe; Does Emily believe in God and just not the Christian rhetoric of the townspeople in Amherst? Or is she simply doubtful all in all; does she believe in ‘God’ and ‘Heaven’ in the same way that she believes in science and nature?
Does Emily believe that the stories and worship that human beings practice are almost anti-religious? That we should just let ‘God’ do its thing and not make up stories about it? It's almost like Emily takes an offense of Christianity FOR God, like she knows there's something out there, but he didn't write any of the bible, and that information is all just a bunch of lies that people use to patronize each other
